The student newsgroups at Penn High School decided that they needed new websites and a new publishing platform. They had been on Drupal for years and wanted to use WordPress. (While Drupal does have it’s merits and I have developed websites and plugins for both WordPress and Drupal, it was too much for a student news organization.)
Penn High School has two student news classes / organizations. Penn News Network covered everything happening at Penn High School. The Pennant covered everything related to Penn sports news.
The Pennant (Website)
The Pennant had started to use twitter very frequently and also started to create custom pre-game videos to advertise some of their games. Their website has numerous features that are visible to the user. Below is a short list of some of the features that are available on the website:
- Features Visible To Site Visitors
- Scoreboard
- News Ticker
- Image Slider
- Rotating Twitter Feed
- Features Visible to Users
- Teams, Games, Brackets, & Profiles
- Story Calendar
- User Activity History
- Easy Background Changer
- Native Google Analytics Dashboard
Penn News Network (PNN)
Penn News Network had a larger group contributing to the content. They needed the ability to grab the visitor’s attention for breaking news, to display messages only to those who are logged in, and to have a built in content form so news stories and feedback can be submitted by the public. Below is a short list of some of the features that are available on the website:
- Features Visible to Visitors
- Announcement Bar (if turned on)
- Responsive Image Galleries
- Classic Twitter feed
- Author profiles linked to stories and media
- Features Visible to Users
- User Notification
- Story Calendar
- User Activity History
- Native Google Analytics Dashboard
